(1) the anionic groups in the multivariate modified starch molecules can protect the cationic groups and electrically reject the active "miscellaneous" anionic interfering substances in the pulp system; On the contrary, the cationic groups in the multivariate modified starch molecules can also protect the anionic groups. This kind of interaction between negative and cationic groups makes it has obvious application effect on straw pulp, waste paper pulp and news paper pulp which contain Yin and Yang "miscellaneous" interfering ion substances (compared with common negative and cationic modified starch). The non-ionic substituents in multivariate starch molecules often play a synergistic role. (2) the charge of the multivariate modified starch is basically balanced, and the additional charge will not affect the Zeta potential in the pulp, making the application conditions relaxed, thus facilitating the application of the paper mill.

Multivariate modified starch balances anion and cationic groups. The common cationic starch forms a flocculation structure by meeting and adsorbing with anion fibers and fillers, thus contributing to the retention of fine fibers and fillers, improving the water filtration, increasing the ash content of the paper, reducing the pulp consumption of tons of paper and reducing the concentration of white water. However, excessive flocculation will affect the evenness of the paper, affecting the quality of products. However, anions in amphoteric starch can not only absorb aluminum ions and negatively charged fibers and fillers, but also protect cations by electrically repelling heteroanions in the system. At the same time, they disperse anionic fibers and fillers, avoiding excessive flocculation [13].

Amphoteric starch exhibited better cadre enhancement performance than cationic starch under many specific conditions. The enhancement effect was mainly manifested as electrostatic attraction between cations on modified starch and anions on paper fibers. There is static rejection in the highly substituted cationic starch, but there is no such rejection in amphoteric starch. Therefore, amphoteric starch shows better enhancement than cationic starch in the lower conductivity slurry [14] [15].
